Game Recap

It was a Thursday full of news and celebrations. First, the Rangers made a roster move calling up Elier Hernandez and optioning Steven Duggar to Triple-A Round Rock. Second, Corey Seager made his third All-Star game in replacement of the Toronto Blue Jays' George Springer. "It's exciting and a special opportunity. I'm happy to represent this team and have some fun out there," Corey Seager said. "I think I played well enough to deserve it, which is nice to get rewarded for [your] play." Thirty minutes before the game, the league announced that Seager would participate in the Home Run Derby. Rangers manager Chris Woodward hinted it would be possible if Seager got selected to the All-Star Game. Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Rangers sent Martín Pérez to the mound to take on a familiar foe in the Seattle Mariners and Marco Gonzales. "We have to do a better job of having consistent [and] quality at-bats," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "We put a ton of pressure on [Gonzales] early and we could have blew him out of the water. We let Gonzales off the hook in those early innings."

The Rangers offense came out soaring early, like Wednesday. Corey Seager started with an RBI double to right field, scoring Marcus Semien. Next, Jonah Heim followed with a double to left field, scoring Seager. Nathaniel Lowe drove in a run on a groundout to complete a three-run first inning for the Rangers. Texas added another run in the second inning with Seager's sacrifice fly. Texas had a chance with the bases loaded and none out but could only put together one run. Seattle picked up their first run in the fourth inning on a Sam Haggerty inside-the-park home run. Like Josh Smith's on Monday, the ball up the middle went underneath the center fielder's glove (Leody Taveras tonight), and Haggerty raced around the bases to score.

The Rangers got a run back in the fifth inning. Leody Taveras singled to right field, scoring Jonah Heim. Then, the Mariners got two runs back on Eugenio Suárez's two-run single to left field, cutting the Rangers' lead to 5-3. The wheels fell off in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Dennis Santana hit Julio Rodríguez to crawl within one. Then, Ty France twisted the game around with a two-run single, turning a one-run Rangers lead to a one-run Rangers deficit. The Rangers had a chance in the ninth with two on, but Adolis García flied out to end the game. "We put our best arms against them and we didn't make enough pitches to get it done."

Martín Pérez pitched a clean first inning, but after that, he labored through the next four innings. With one-hundred and two pitches, Pérez threw five innings, allowed one run, three hits, and walked four. Martín Pérez set his own Rangers record for strikeouts in a start and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts. "They made me work a lot today," Martín Pérez said. "Four walks, but that's part of the game. Sometimes you want to go deep, and you just go five. It's part of the game."

Thursday. After Martín, Garrett Richards pitched a clean sixth inning but ran into a bit of trouble in the seventh. Richards allowed two hits and recorded one out in the seventh. Matt Moore entered to finish the inning. Moore allowed a two-run single (charged to Garrett Richards) but retired two Mariners to keep the lead. Dennis Santana struggled on Thursday. After striking out Cal Raleigh to start the inning, he allowed three straight hits and hit a batter to force in a run. Santana's line ended with three runs as Brock Burke allowed the two-run single, but retired the next two hitters to finish the eighth. Josh Sborz allowed a lead off single, but didn't allow a run in his one inning of work.

Postgame Notes

  • Sam Haggerty's inside-the-park home run was the second inside-the-park home run in the past four days and the third all-time at Globe Life Field. It's also the Mariners' first inside-the-park home-run since 2007 (Willie Bloomquist on June 15th).
