Game Recap

Rangers and Mariners met for the second game of a three-game series. Before the game, the Rangers honored Ian Kinsler and John Blake as the club inducted them into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame. “It means a lot that we created a buzz and atmosphere along with the fans,” Ian Kinsler said. “The tailgating [and] the Rangers flags flying everywhere. To be honored with those guys in the Rangers Hall of Fame, it’s something I’m proud of, humbling, and a treat.” “It’s humbling and strange,” John Blake said. “Usually, I’m coordinating all of this, and [now I’m] totally in the dark about what’s happening. They kept me out of it as much as possible to try to keep some surprises. But, it’s nice to be recognized for spending so much time with this franchise.” For the game, Dane Dunning got the start against a familiar foe, Marco Gonzales. "I think I see the ball pretty well on him," Charlie Culberson told me as Culberson entered the game 10 for 22 lifetime against Gonzales. "Marco does pitch [and] mixes it up pretty well. He tends to spot up pretty well too. You got to tip your cap to guys that know how to pitch, and [Marco] does. I think he's had success against me and vice versa. For me, it's a fun at-bat. He doesn't throw super hard, but he mixes it up, and it's just a fun at-bat."

The night didn't start well for Dane Dunning and the Rangers. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch brought Julio Rodríguez for the first run. Then Eugenio Suárez drove a sacrifice fly scoring Ty France to put Seattle up 2-0 after half an inning. The Mariners added another run on a Sam Haggerty sacrifice fly scoring Cal Raleigh. With minor offense, the bats exploded in the fourth inning. With one out, Texas scored a run on back-to-back doubles by Adolis García and Jonah Heim. After Nathaniel Lowe singled, Charlie Culberson drove in Heim by beating out a base hit, and Ezequiel Duran tied the game up with a single up the middle. The Rangers took the lead on a Bubba Thompson sacrifice bunt scoring Culberson, giving the Rangers a 4-3 lead. "We saw him the first time through and the second time through we made adjustments and starting hitting," Ezequiel Duran said. "First time around we didn't do much, but I was proud of our commitment to stay in the middle of the field [and] staying on some pitches," Rangers manager Chris Woodward added.

Texas added another run on a Corey Seager shot to right field (416 feet at 107 MPH). Nathaniel Lowe singled to center field, but Julio threw out Jonah Heim at third base (he came off the base), ending Texas' scoring chance. Right after, Suárez hammered a homer to left-center field to reduce the Rangers' lead to 5-4. Texas answered with a Josh Smith flick to right-center field, scoring Duran, who walked in the inning. It extended the lead to 6-4. Rangers loaded the bases in the seventh with one out, but Mariners reliever Chris Flexen got Duran to pop out and Thompson to flyout shy of the left field wall. In the eighth, Texas took advantage of a Cal Raleigh error on a pickoff that moved Josh Smith from first to third. Adolis grounded to a 6-4 fielders' choice, scoring Smith. The Rangers held Seattle in check and took game two of the series. "Nice to see the winning fight [tonight] [and] better solutions in the batters' box," Chris Woodward said. "Overall the at-bats were a lot better today."

Dane Dunning struggled with his command on Saturday but battled throughout the night. Dunning ended up going 4.1 innings throwing 101 pitches. His night ended, allowing five hits, three runs, three walks, and striking out five. "One of those days that I didn't have feel in the zone," Dane Dunning said. "I try to go out there and get us to the second half [and] that leadoff walk in the fifth hurt a lot. [It] was very frustrating, but I will say one thing is my team had my back and was able to put together a good rally and bail me out a bit. [I] wish I could have done better for them."

Brett Martin came in to clean up the fifth inning with one on and one out. He retired Jesse Winker on a double play, and The twin killing completed Martin's night. Brock Burke allowed a home run in his two innings and two hits in the sixth inning. In the seventh, Burke retired the side in order. Matt Moore walked a batter in his inning but threw a scoreless inning after throwing on Friday. Jonathan Hernández closed the night with a scoreless ninth inning capping off a strong pitching night.
