Game Recap
After an exciting, yet more dramatic than needed to be, night last night, the Rangers and Athletics played game two of a three-game series Tuesday. It was Glenn Otto's turn in the rotation as Otto came off a start against the Orioles, where he pitched five innings and allowed one earned run (an error allowed two runs to score). Meanwhile, the Texas offense saw James Kaprielian again. In Kaprielian's start on May 29th, the Rangers tagged him for four runs in 4.1 innings in a 6-5 loss. Once again, Kaprielian started and it ended up being a wild loss. "These guys have to step up and do the job for us," Chris Woodward said. "Otto was fine until the fifth. I thought he was throwing the ball well [but] the wheels came off there. We have to do a better job offensively from the fifth inning on. We got to be better."
The Rangers struck first in the bottom of the first when Marcus Semien homered to the Oakland bullpen. The homer came after a Josh Smith legged out double as Texas took a 2-0 lead. The Athletics answered with a run in the second inning on a Tony Kemp RBI single to right field, scoring Elvis Andrus. In the fourth, Leody Taveras doubled to the right-field wall to pick up his fourth run batted in the past two games and extend the Rangers' lead to 3-1. However, the wheels semi-fell off in the fifth. Oakland loaded the bases with none out and scored a run on an RBI fielder's choice by Ramon Laureano. Then, Sean Murphy grounded back to Glenn Otto, but his throw to Sam Huff went wide, allowing two runs to score. "I didn't know what to do with the ball when it came to me," Otto said on the wild throw. "As a pitcher you are expected to field your position and have a clue what to do when the ball comes back to you. It's a huge mental error on my part, unacceptable."
The Athletics had a few chances in the eighth inning. Stephen Vogt grounded out to bring home a run against Joe Barlow and extend the A's lead to 5-3. Then Sam Huff threw out Seth Brown at third base with one out. After the Rangers cracked the scoreboard in the fourth, they could not solve Kaprielian or the Oakland bullpen. The Rangers went 0 for 12 from the fifth to the eighth until Corey Seager broke that stretch. Seager sent one to the Rangers bullpen homering for the fifth straight day. After Leody doubled, Kole Calhoun ripped a single to right field, tying the game up at five and sending it to extra innings.
In the extra frame, Oakland scored their run with a Sean Murphy single. Murphy moved to third on a passed ball by Sam Huff, but did not score, keeping the game 6-5 Oakland. With Huff at third base and two outs, Marcus Semien came up clutch to tie the game on a double to left field. Both teams had chances in the 11th inning with a runner at third and less than two outs, but both could not bring a run home. Oakland broke the game open in the 12th with a sacrifice fly, a RBI single, and a RBI double to spot three runs. Then Chad Pinder ended any possible chance of a comeback with a grand slam to left field. The Rangers picked up a run on Josh Smith's RBI single, but all it did was get Rangers fans some 50% off pizza (possibly). It was a heartbreaker Tuesday at the ballpark.
For the first four innings, Glenn Otto looked good. He didn't walk a batter, got into some favorable counts, and finished off Oakland hitters. However, the fifth turned a corner. Otto walked the first batter of the inning, and then an error scored two runs. Glenn left in the fifth inning, only throwing sixty-two pitches. "Execution was better," Glenn Otto said on his start Tuesday. "I got ahead of a lot of guys. Guys made some good plays behind me and definitely felt like I was cruising in the first four innings and it started with the leadoff walk to Kemp. It snowballed from there."
Matt Moore finished the fifth inning and pitched a flawless sixth inning. Moore struck out three and retired all five he faced in order. Matt Bush walked a batter in his inning but didn't allow a run. Joe Barlow ran into trouble in his inning. He allowed the first two to reach on hits and one scored, but Barlow settled down and got out of the inning with the lone run scored. Brock Burke pitched a scoreless ninth allowing one hit and striking out one. Brett Martin entered the tenth and allowed the zombie runner to score, but prevented further damage. Dennis Santana had a clutch 11th by stranding the zombie runner at 3rd. He struck out one hitter too. However, in the twelfth, he allowed a single, a double, and three walks (one intentional). "I did not want [Santana] to go back out. He's like no I got this. He did his job in the [11th]," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said about Dennis Santana. Kolby Allard finished the inning but allowed a grand slam then recorded two outs.
Postgame Notes
The five straight home runs by Corey Seager is the longest streak currently in MLB. It matches the longest by a Rangers shortstop (Alex Rodriguez in 2003).
Since coming back off the injured list, Glenn Otto is 0-4 with an 8.22 ERA (four starts). However, it was Otto's first start, where he did not walk three batters. Glenn does not have a start in 2022, where he hasn't walked a batter.
Since June 2nd, Marcus Semien is 43 for 146 (.295) with eleven home runs, twenty-three RBIs, and seventeen extra-base hits.
Leody Taveras entered June 29th with seventeen career RBIs (96 games). In eleven games since June 29th, Leody picked up eight RBIs
James Kaprielian made his eighth start Tuesday against the Rangers. It's the most against any team (next is five against the Mariners).
Tuesday was the longest game in Globe Life Field history in the regular season or postseason (in terms of innings).
Glenn Otto's throwing error in the fifth is the seventh throwing error by Rangers' pitchers. It's third in the American League and tied for third in MLB.
Matt Moore is on a fourteen consecutive appearance streak (eighteen innings) where he hasn't allowed an earned run. Unfortunately, he's allowed two unearned runs in that stretch.
