Game Recap

Tuesday had a “beat goes on” feeling about how 2022 has gone for the Texas Rangers. "We're going to keep fighting," Rangers manager Chris Woodward told Jared Sandler after the game. "I know that for a fact."

Immediately Gray struck out Adam Frazier on a nice slider. Still, after hitting Ty France and walking Jesse Winker, Eugenio Suárez launched a three-run home run to left-center field. Gray’s struggles continued in the second when Jared Kelenic hit a ball off the right-field foul pole, and quickly the Mariners took a 4-0 lead. Gray settled down and retired ten straight Seattle Mariners before Tom Murphy broke that up in the fifth inning with a single. Gray’s night ended by going five innings, allowing three hits, two walks, and struck out four. "It was big for him to go get through five," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said after the game. "The damage was done in that first inning. You could tell [Jon] was a little bit rusty."

Brett Martin came in and pitched a scoreless sixth inning; however, he recorded two outs on fly balls hit right at the edge of the warning track. Spencer Patton came on for the seventh, and the home run ball bit Spencer Tuesday. Julio Rodríguez singled, and Abraham Toro homered to right-center field to extend the Seattle lead back to four runs. Matt Moore came in to finish the seventh and pitched the eighth, which he was unscored upon.

The Rangers' offense started the game with two hits in the first four at-bats against Robbie Ray. Unfortunately, Nathaniel Lowe struck out to end an early threat. The combination of Eli White and Marcus Semien accounted for the first two runs of the night. White doubled to start the third and stole third base, scoring on a Semien sacrifice fly. Then in the fifth inning, Eli walked with two outs while Marcus snuck a ball to left field, scoring White. After that, Texas didn’t score outside of fifth and had only two baserunners (Miller singled in the seventh and Lowe single in the ninth). "I thought the [at-bats] were okay," Chris Woodward said on how his team fared against Robbie Ray. "I thought there were occasions where we were a little late to the heater. He's got good stuff and he has a good fastball and a slider to go with it."

Postgame Notes

  • The Rangers' 2-8 record to start 2022 is the worst start through ten games since 1987 when the club started 1-9.

  • Jon Gray’s five innings was the second time a Rangers starter pitched at least five full innings. Dane Dunning went five full innings on April 9th against the Blue Jays. The Rangers still don’t have a starter to start the sixth inning.

  • The Rangers had two at-bats with runners in scoring position. One came in the first inning, and the other came after the Semien double in the fifth. The Mariners were two for three with runners in scoring position, and both hits were home runs.

  • Texas has dropped six of its last seven series openers on the road dating back to September of 2021.

  • Jon Gray is on a stretch where he’s pitched five innings or less in eight consecutive starts. The last start he went longer than exactly five innings was August 22nd, 2021, against Arizona (as a Colorado Rockies pitcher).

  • Nathaniel Lowe’s consecutive on-base streak continues at ten straight. Lowe’s single in the ninth kept that streak alive.

  • Texas has dropped seventeen of their last nineteen at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

  • The Seattle Mariners were 2 for 4 on 0-2 counts with two home runs and five RBIs (Suárez homer and Toro homer)
