Game Recap

In the first inning, both the Rangers and Athletics went down in order on thirteen pitches. Then the Texas offense went to work against the rookie Oller. Adolis García reached on an infield single followed by a Nathaniel Lowe opposite-field home run. Andy Ibáñez added a run on a homer to left field to pad the Texas lead to 3-0. Willie Calhoun started another rally with a walk, then Jonah Heim doubled. Brad Miller came into the action on a twenty-foot dribbler that hugged the third baseline, and the inning capped off on a Marcus Semien sacrifice fly, finishing a five-run second inning.

The Rangers' offense didn't get much at the plate after that, as Adam Oller settled down after the rough second inning. The Rangers had two walks and one hit between the third and eighth, which Lowe reached two of those times (hit and walk). In the ninth, Texas added three insurance runs as Ibáñez walked, Solak singled (though he was caught stealing), and Heim drove in Andy with an RBI single. Corey Seager drove in Heim with a single, and Marcus Semien scored a run on a wild pitch.

Meanwhile, Glenn Otto had arguably the best start of a Texas Ranger in 2022. He still wasn't able to throw a pitch in the sixth, but Otto threw five masterful innings allowing two hits, one run, one walk, and struck out five. The projected pitch count for Glenn on Friday was seventy-five, and Otto hit that exact mark. He set down the first nine he faced, but in the fourth inning, back-to-back doubles by Sean Murphy and Seth Brown put the Athletics on the board. Then, he worked out of a two-out walk in the fifth to cap off a great night on the mound. "We needed someone to come up, set the tone, and really give us a good pitching outing," Jonah Heim said after the game. "What Glenn did was outstanding. We were on the same page and he couldn't miss his spots. What he did was special and we needed it."

Matt Moore came in for the sixth and seventh. While he walked a couple, Moore struck out three batters and snagged a laser line drive off the bat of Mickey McDonald. "I think he adjusted to a new style of pitching," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "He talked to Doug [Mathis] and [Brendan Sagara] about his curveball, [he added] a slight change of grip, [but] it's filthy right now. He's adjusted to a curveball first pitcher." Then, John King entered the game and threw a scoreless eighth inning with two groundouts and a flyout. Garrett Richards closed the game out with a three up and three down inning. The bullpen didn't allow a base hit in their four innings of work.

Postgame Notes

  • Glenn Otto earned his first Major League pitching win.

  • Friday was the first game in 2022. The Rangers didn't trail at any point.

  • For Glenn Otto, it was the first start allowing one run or fewer since his first MLB start (August 27th, 2021, vs. Houston Astros).

  • Adam Oller allowed ten total runs in the second inning in three starts.

  • The Rangers had four at-bats Friday with runners in scoring position. Though three of those ABs came in the ninth inning.

  • Nathaniel Lowe reached base twenty-four times in 2022 (team lead). Corey Seager and Adolis García are second on the team with sixteen.

  • In Jonah Heim's six starts, the Rangers have won three of them (3-3). The only game the Rangers won when Heim hasn't played was Thursday's win against Seattle.

  • Athletics catcher Christian Bethancourt has thrown out two baserunners in three games he's appeared in after throwing out Nick Solak in the ninth. Bethancourt hasn't allowed a stolen base in 2022.

  • Glenn Otto threw a first pitch strike to ten of the first eleven Oakland Athletics hitters.
