Game Recap
Don't be shy. When the Blue Jays took a 6-1 lead to the fourth inning, you told your wife/husband/dog that I'm going to do some sort of chores and loosely watch the game. With Blue Jays' starter Hyun Jin Ryu on the mound and Texas not able to muster up any offense, it looked like it would be a long Sunday of baseball. Nick Solak homered in the second inning, which was nice to see, but Texas' bats went to work beginning in the fourth. "First pitch curveball down, changeup off the plate. I had a good feeling that he would come with a heater, so I was on time and ready for the fastball," Nick Solak told 105.3 the Fan after the game on his second-inning home run. The flood gates opened in the fourth, and the walk to Mitch Garver started things off with an Adolis García force out followed by five straight hits. With an odd bloop single to cap off a six-run fourth inning, Corey Seager's RBI turned a 6-1 deficit into a 7-6 lead. "I thought we did a really good job, especially the second time around against Ryu," Rangers' manager Chris Woodward told Jared Sandler. "Once we got him out of the game, we felt pretty confident that we could do the same in the bullpen, and the at-bat quality was phenomenal."
An issue for Texas in this series was the bullpen holding leads. While it was excellent bounce-back outings for John King and Josh Sborz after a rough Opening Day, Brock Burke was the impressive reliever of the day. Burke allowed one hit, no runs, and struck out five Toronto Blue Jays in his two innings. "This guy has no pulse," Woodward said. "He walked Guerrero [Jr.] on four pitches and then comes back and executes two batters in a row with Hernández and Gurriel [Jr.], blew them away." Nick Solak had a career four runs scored, Jonah Heim and Brad Miller went back-to-back, and the bottom of the order forcefully took over the game Sunday. "Today got down early and kept fighting back," Brad Miller told Emily Jones. "It was huge to come back against this team in this environment. That's awesome." The Rangers quickly go on a plane and head to Arlington to start the first of eighty-one games at Globe Life Field Monday against the Colorado Rockies. Royse City, Texas-born Taylor Hearn gets the start against the Rockies' Austin Gomber. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:07 Central / 2:07 Mountain.
Postgame Notes
Nick Solak reached base four times on Sunday. He had three games which he reached four times in 2021. They all came in the first two months of last year (4/18, 5/15, 5/22).
The Rangers scored six runs in the fourth inning. It's the most runs the team scored on the road in an inning since September 7th, 2019, at the Orioles (6 runs in the first).
Nick Solak had a career-high four runs scored on Sunday. It's the 78th time in Rangers history a player scored four runs.
Corey Seager has multi-hit games in three straight to start his Rangers' career. The franchise record for a player to start his Rangers' career is Vladimir Guerrero, who had four straight multi-hit games to begin his Rangers' career (2010).
In this series, Blue Jays' starter ERA was 13.49 (José Berríos, Kevin Gausman, and Hyun Jin Ryu). They allowed thirteen runs in just under nine innings.
The Rangers matched their longest comeback from last year. On September 30th, 2021, they trailed 5-0 to the Angels in the 3rd inning and won 7-6. Texas trailed 6-1 to start the 4th inning Sunday.
The Rangers 6-9 hitters on Sunday: 8 for 14 with 3 HRs, 10 RBI, 9 runs scored, 5 walks, and 2 strikeouts (Solak, Culberson, Lowe, Heim, White, and Miller). Previously, the team's 6-9 hitters were 4 for 29 on Friday and Saturday, combined with one extra-base hit.
Texas scored 29 runs in their previous nine games against the Blue Jays away from Arlington. They put up 12 on Sunday in four innings.
The Rangers didn't put up a six-run inning in April last season. But, three games into the season, they have their first six-run frame.
