Game Recap

"It sucks, it's not fun. At the same time, we got to keep fighting," Rangers manager Chris Woodward told Jared Sandler after the game. Once again, the Rangers made a little noise in the top of the first inning but couldn't capitalize. Mitch Garver hit into an inning-ending double play with runners at the corners to end the first. The second night in a row in Seattle, Texas, had two baserunners on in the first and couldn't score. "We had a chance to punch him in teh mouth," Woodward said after the game. "We didn't score there [and] kind of gave them a little hope. If we scored a couple there, or at least one, things change."

The Mariners looked like they had a long inning ahead of them in the first, but Jesse Winker hit a soft line drive to Nathaniel Lowe, which started a 3-6 triple play. It helped Dane Dunning, who had previous struggles in the first inning. Both offenses were quiet until the bottom of the third when Cal Raleigh reached on a Lowe error, scoring Abraham Toro and putting Seattle up 1-0.

The fifth inning created a disaster for Texas. After Adam Frazier doubled, Ty France singled in a run and ended Dunning's night, unable to finish the fifth. John King came in and had some command issues Wednesday. King walked two and allowed two hits. The Mariners scored three runs in the fifth (two charged to Dane and one to King), where Adolis García almost picked up an outfield assist. Unfortunately, the call at the plate ruled Jesse Winker safe (even though Winker looked out). Brock Burke continued to impress, allowing one baserunner and striking out three in his two innings. Garrett Richards ended the night with a scoreless eighth inning. Excitement came in the ninth. After back-to-back singles, Mitch Garver drove in a run as he reached base on an error, preventing the potential shutout on Wednesday. García hit a sacrifice fly to score a run, but the two-run rally fell short in the ninth.

While Dane Dunning's pitching line looks okay, it was a night that the Rangers hoped a starter would pitch into the sixth inning. Instead, Dunning allowed six hits, three runs, three walks, and three strikeouts in his third start of 2022. " He was okay," Woodward said. "There were some critical pitches there in that fourth inning [and] the two-out walk." Logan Gilbert pitched into the seventh on the Mariners' side but left with two outs in the inning after Adolis García doubled, picking up the Rangers' only extra-base hit of the night. Gilbert allowed six hits, too but didn't walk a batter and struck out four. The offense had little to no momentum throughout the game, including a few mental mistakes. One in the field on the second Adam Frazier double, and García tagged out going between second and third. It's been the fourth straight "flattened" game for Texas.
